I hate TV sometimes. My 3 year old loves it and I think because of that reason I hate it.
Drake is not the shy child you see clutching onto his mothers leg at the shopping store. No, no, no, he's the one touching everything he can. He's the loudest kid in the store. He's not afraid of ANYTHING. I love this about him, well, most of the time. However, when we meet new people or when I want him to behave his very best, I'd like him to just calm down for a bit. Anyway, back to this TV thing. Drake is a talker (I wonder where he got that from) and he's very articulate as well. He picks up EVERYTHING that you say!!! And because of this I hate TV now.
Drake can say some really bad words. He has said a few 4 letter words but I'm talking about words like 'stupid', 'loser' or 'idiot'. I can't stand those words coming out of me 3 year olds mouth. Oh, and the #1 word that I hate him saying is the Lords name in vain. He's only said my #1 hated word 2 or 3 times, but in my book that's 2 or 3 times more than he should have. He doesn't say any of these words very often because he knows they are bad words but I swear he only says them when we are around other people. They've got to think I'm raising some punk kid or something. I don't know how to get away from these words.
- On Toy Story, Woody calls Buzz an 'idiot'. Thanks Pixar!
- EVERY Single channel (even Disney and Nick channels) say the Lords name in vain.
- On Kai Lan, she called something 'stupid'.
And the list goes on and on.
I know that Drake is just pushing my buttons, and I'm sure he's just testing the water to see what he can get away with. But, I want to hear from other parents. What do you do about this? My son can't be the only one that does this. Am I being too picky about what I consider 'bad words'? I just think he's too young to say those words.
Comments??? PLEASE!

My son walks around saying chit! chits! chit! and we have no idea what he is saying. We thought he was copying us since we say "shoot" but he says that when he drops something clearly. We thought maybe chips? anyway, other people probably think we swear like sailors around him hahaha.
ReplyDeleteI don't think you're picky. I dont like when people use the words idiot or stupid (although Im sure I do when I get road rage) it would just be hard to hear my little boy say those things. Whenever there is name calling on cartoons i cringe a little, its not good for kids! You arent alone. Im sure any day now Kaius will pick up those same words.
I am right there with ya mad. I am sorry. The only thing I can say is what we do for our 6 year old. We tell them that they are bad words and then when he says them again either by accident or purpose he would get soap or hot sauce in his mouth. We almost even carried around a little thing of liquid soap with us for a while. Anyway it did not take long for him to realize that he could not say those words cause they were bad and just like the soap and hot sauce in his mouth the words would leave a bad taste as well. It worked but alot of people don't think that is a very good way to handle it. I guess everyone has their opinions though. I hope you find something that works for you!
ReplyDeleteI have been thinking about you lately. I hope your doing well. I miss ya like crazy. I love checkin your blog. Your pics are always so fun!
Oh Madalyn, I am right there with you... Addi has been good to catch onto what is nice to say and what isn't. If I hear it on a show I am quick to let them know that that is not a word we use. And if I hear them say those words we won't watch that show again. Right now the kids are trying to earn a trip to Chuck e Cheese, so threatening to take away their stickers from their chart is the worst/best punishment ever. Maybe doing a chart were he can earn something by not saying those things would be an incentive to him too ? It is worth a try.
